Melancholy Man Infiltrates Lively Lair (2004)
| Ensemble: Concert Band
Duration: ~5-6 minutes
I had only written two pieces for concert band before this one, and they hardly count as they were done while I was in middle school. The Greenville County Concert Band had a contest for young composers to write a 3-6 minute composition, grade level 3, for concert band, and I decided to try out my diatonic writing. Being level 3, there is little room for chromaticism.
Simultaneously, the PTA Reflections program was nearing its deadline, and the theme for the year was, "A Different Kind of Hero." I decided to cheesily interpret the minor sonorities of the piece into being a sad hero. Heroes of the Super persuasion are generally go-get-um, happy guys, but my DIFFERENT hero was a SAD hero who fought a HAPPY villain... Yeah....
Either way, I didn't get the highest marks in either competition, but for my efforts, I received $50 (GCCB) and 3rd place in the state (Reflections). Considering it's not exemplary of most of my music, I'm totally cool with those awards!
